Medtner’s Romantic Sketches for the young, Op.54. Medtner’s music is rooted in a very complex way in the Russian culture prevailing around the turn of the century. Medtner focuses on numerous German and Russian songs combining the tradition of the German art song with that of the Russian romance. With regard to their compositional perfection, their depth of expression and the spiritualization of their lyrics these songs are almost without parallel.
