Critics are often made to Czerny´s exercises books, generally equaling all his books to the repetition Hanon exercises, saying that they are all based in repetition to increase the strength of the fingers. In fact, the books of Czerny, while advocating the repetition of some exercises, are based on the various technical, musical and stylistic problems that a student can find in musical literature. Some argue that pianists should only study direct in musical works. However, the concept of Étude (developed by Czerny and used by other composers like Chopin) is a direct approach to the musical work, so that, despite the criticisms, Czerny´s books continue to be used for many piano teachers around the world and many of Czerny´s Études are constantly performed by students in concert rooms and piano recitals thanks to its musicality.
