Here is an essential book for beginning and early level pianists! The Mikrokosmos encompass 153 progressive piano pieces in 6 volumes and were written between 1926 and 1937. Bartok began writing these pieces for his son Peter. When completed, they comprised one of the most comprehensive collections of contemporary technique and idioms for the piano ever assembled. In volume two, there are 29 pieces written mostly in five-finger positions with many of the same compositional and technical devices as in the first volume.
The pieces deal with canon, pentatonic melody, chromatic writing, triplets in Lydian mode, Mixolydian mode, Hungarian style, etc. there is also an appendix containing 14 exercises. There is an interesting preface printed in English, German, & French. The titles of the pieces are also written in English, French, & German.
