The Mikrokosmos encompass 153 progressive piano pieces in 6 volumes and were written between 1926 and 1937. Bartok began writing these pieces for his son Peter. When completed, they comprised one of the most comprehensive collections of contemporary technique and idioms for the piano ever assembled.
